Bay Area Temp Staffing Agency

Coronavirus has impacted everyone, and the wine industry is no exception. As wineries, bars, and liquor stores were forced to close or reduce their hours, consumers turned to other methods of purchasing wine. The direct to consumer channel saw a massive increase in sales, with 1 million more cases of wine shipped to consumers in the first half of 2020 than had been shipped in the same period in 2019, a 29% increase.

What happened?

With the closing of brick-and-mortar wine retailers, consumers turned to order wine straight to their door, and actually bought more than they had in previous years. In the first 6 months of 2020, consumers spent $222 million more on wine than they more than they had in the first half of 2019. Wineries in the Sonoma region were some of the biggest beneficiaries of this increase of DtC sales, adding 290,000 cases shipped and $71 million in additional revenue. This is an incredible success for the wineries, especially at a time when many other industries are struggling.
