The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program is set to expire at the end of this year. The program was created under the CARES Act for those who aren’t normally eligible for regular state unemployment, like gig workers, but who lost their jobs and/or income as a result of the pandemic. Additionally, Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation program, which provides benefits to those who’ve been affected by the pandemic but have exhausted their state’s regular benefits, is set to run out as well.
In total, an estimated 16 million Americans who have been receiving expanded benefits through the CARES Act are expected to lose government assistance on December 26, 2020. Because of this, we can expect to see a sharp increase in job applications in the beginning of the year.
If you are one of the millions of Americans who may lose their benefits at the end of the year, starting your job search early is important for getting ahead of the rush of applications. You may want to consider applying for short term jobs, which can provide you with a paycheck during this uncertain time. While some industries have suffered due to the pandemic, there are many industries and companies that are hiring right now.
