Very often when a company decides to use temps there is a short term problem that needs an immediate solution. Because employers are focused on solving the problem, there is a tendency to bring in the temporary employee more hastily than they would a regular hire. Of course many of the formalities of hiring are irrelevant to temps. That fact also contributes to treating the temp in an entirely different manner than a new hire.
However, none of that changes the fact that a temp is human and has the same uncertainties that anyone else has when starting a new job.
Do you welcome your temps as part of the team that makes your company successful? Do you brief your temps on company policies regarding breaks, cell phone usage and other company rules in the same way that you inform your new hires?
Do you provide areas for your temps to store personal items such as clothing and lunches in the same way you do for your regular employees? If not, do you explain why in a way that leads to mutual understanding?
Work is a social experience as much as it is an economic exchange. Everyone benefits from the human touch. Employees who feel welcome and part of the organization are bound to perform better than those who are treated as outsiders.
