Unintended Consequences: New Overtime Rules' Impact on Employees

The Department of Labor recently issued new, rewritten overtime rules under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The President decreed the changes last year, directing the labor secretary to draft new rules. As the rules are now rolling out, there are serious doubts about the benefits they will bring. Unlike what many seem to think, employers are not mindless widgets inertly subject to the whims of politicians and bureaucrats. Caught between the new rules and economic survival, there still are measures available to employers. Unfortunately none of them are pleasant, either for employers or employees.
If you’re an employee, being aware of the vise the government puts your boss may give you a new appreciation of the often capricious demands employers routinely face. Sadly that won’t be much consolation if you are one of those who lose out because of the “goodness” of government.
