What Should I Do If I Haven’t Heard Back from a Job Application?

We get it- applying for jobs is stressful, and the waiting game that comes after you apply is even worse.  Staying confident and being patient while awaiting a response is important, but eventually, it is up to you to reach out!  Contacting employers can be intimidating, but we have a few tips to help you hear back from an employer as soon as possible.

Most employers take at least 7 days to respond to an application.  Once you’ve waited longer than a week, use a timeline like this one to follow up:

1. Reread the job posting

Sometimes, employers include details about a follow-up schedule in the job description.  Usually, this information would be toward the bottom of the page.  If there is not any information about following up, use the phone number or email address provided to complete step two.

2. Reach out to Human Resources

You might be hesitant to bother your potential boss.  If you haven’t heard back from a job application, reach out to the company’s human resources department and ask for a status update.

3. Send a follow-up email or call the employer

Once you find the email or phone number on the application, use a template like this to address your employer:

Greeting- Address them using their name.

Introduction- Write/say your full name.

The Reason for your Email or Call- Explain the position you applied for and why you would be a good fit for the role.

The Status of Your Application- Ask if your application has been reviewed or if a decision has been made regarding your application.

Closing- Thank them for their time and provide your contact information.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed thinking about writing this email, use this template!  It will gently nudge your employer to get back to you.  All you need to do is replace the words in brackets with your information!

Dear [name of employer or HR representative],

My name is [your name] and I recently applied to the [job title] position within your company.  I am reaching out to inquire about the status of my application for the position.  I am extremely excited about this opportunity because my experience in [your skills/job history] would be a great addition to your team.  I look forward to speaking with you soon to further discuss the details of my resume and the [job title] position.  You can reach me at [your phone number] or [your email address] [your availability (ex. Anytime this week, Monday-Friday from 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM, etc.)].

[your full name]

[your phone number]

[your email address]

4. Apply to other jobs

While you are awaiting your decision, apply for other positions.  It is okay to keep your options open and find other positions you are interested in. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find your dream job!
