Tips for Video Call Success

The coronavirus pandemic has changed a lot about office life. Makeshift home office setups, multitasking to keep the kids busy and shifting office culture are all products of the crazy world we live in. Many people have had to become accustomed to the shift from in person meetings to video calls. Whether you have a daily video meeting or an interview, Bolt is here to help with some helpful tips to make sure that your next video call is a success.

Make sure everything is working

  • It is a great idea to make sure that everything is working on your laptop or phone before the meeting starts. The last thing you want to happen is to be asked a question and be unable to answer due to technical difficulties. Check that your front facing camera is clean and working and make sure that you have a working microphone. Earbuds with a microphone are an inexpensive way to make sure you can hear everything and be heard by your coworkers. • Also, make sure that you have downloaded the correct software before the call. There are plenty of video calling platforms and some require you to download an application or make an account, so make sure you know which platform you will be using. Zoom, Google Hangouts, Skype, GoToMeeting and others all have different setups, so you should become familiar with whichever app the meeting is on.

Look and act professionally

  • While you may no longer be commuting into an office it is still important to look good on video calls, at least from the waist up! Make sure you have on a nice shirt and that your hair is presentable. Studies have shown that getting dressed can increase productivity, and it helps make sure that those in your office are taking you seriously. It can also be a fun way to break up the daily routine you may have fallen into.
  • When speaking, look into the camera not at yourself, though it may be tempting. Try to speak as clearly as possible, as sometimes connection issues can make it difficult for others to hear you.

Limit distractions

  • It is easy to get distracted on video calls. To make sure that people are paying attention to what you’re saying make sure to limit distractions as much as possible. It is best to keep your device in one stationary location, because moving around can make a lot of noise. Try to set up in front of a neutral background and alert those in the house that you will be on a call.
  • Headphones with a microphone will also help to reduce background noise. If there are extra background noises around you while you are not speaking, it is a good idea to mute yourself so to not disturb the rest of the meeting.

Good luck on your next call, you’ve got this!
