Petaluma: Shopping Small While Staying Safe

Petaluma Temp Agency

New rules for retailers were released from Governor Gavin Newsom this week, allowing some businesses to partially reopen. About a third of retail stores in downtown Petaluma opened this weekend to customers, conducting their business curbside. Getting outside and shopping local can be a great way to do something fun while stimulating the local economy. Here are some tips we have compiled to keep you safe and healthy while shopping local.

Wear a mask!

  • Some areas require masks and others don’t, but a great way to protect yourself and others in public is to wear some sort of facial covering in public. If you cannot find masks in stores, don’t worry! This website gives detailed instructions for two different kinds of masks you can make out of an old t-shirt. You can also wear other coverings like a scarf or a bandana over your face, the most important thing is that the covering fits your face snugly and covers your nose and mouth.

Bring hand sanitizer

  • Portable hand sanitizers can be a great way to keep your hands clean when you don’t have access to soap and water. Check out this great Petaluma based company, Lighting Spirits, who is using their distillery equipment to make FDA grade hand sanitizer at an affordable price.  They are also donating a portion of the hand sanitizers they make to local hospitals, police stations and service industries.

Avoid touching your face when in public

  • One of the best ways to keep yourself safe from viruses is to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth while out in public. When you’re in an area where many people are touching the same items, like supermarketspharmacies and retail stores, it is especially important to avoid touching your face. This small step is a great way to keep you, your family and your community healthy.

Check online for retailers

  • If you do not feel comfortable shopping in public yet, there are still other ways to support your local businesses. Check to see if your favorite stores are selling online, many local retailers have shifted their brick and mortar business to online during the mandatory stay at home period. Econscious, a Petaluma based company which makes sustainable clothing, has all of their products available online.

Shopping small is more important now than ever. The city of Petaluma has launched an online shopping portal, shoppetaluma.com, where you can check to see which of your favorite Petaluma businesses and restaurants are still operating, and how you can support them. Support your local businesses while keeping yourself safe!
