Skills Gap, Part 1

For several years there’s been a lot of discussion about the “skills gap”, regarding the number of jobs that are desperate for people to fill them.  While some of the problem has been due to corporate reluctance to offer training specific to their jobs, as well as unrealistic approaches to screening for prospective hires, there is also a very real shortage of people in some occupations.
The American Staffing Association (ASA) recently unveiled its “Skills Gap Index” that tracks the hardest to fill jobs. To people involved in health care, it will come as no surprise 7 of the top 10 are Occupational, Physical and Speech therapists and assistants as well as Physician assistants and Nursing instructors. If you have kids in high school and college wondering about career choices there’s plenty of opportunity here.
However, some of the other hard-to-fill jobs may surprise you. Truck drivers, and specific retail skills are also in need.  Finally, the not so surprising shortage of software engineers continues.
